The Real Skinny on Losing it by Michelle McKinney Hammond
The Real Skinny on Losing it by Michelle McKinney Hammond
I found this book to be entertaining and easy to read. If you are a fan of this author or like really conversational-styled writing then you will like this book, too.
If you have struggled with gaining and losing weight repeatedly (a “yo-yo dieter”) then you will feel right at home. Michelle does a superb job of making that type of woman feel like she is not alone. She is open and honest about her successes and failures in the weight loss diet arena in such a way that everyone can relate, even if you aren’t a “yo-yo dieter”.
Being a life and wellness coach, I especially liked the questions the author posed at the end of every chapter under the heading “Keeping it Real”. I would have liked to see more instructions on how to use the questions though, and on what to do with the answers. The what’s-next-piece, seemed to be missing for me there.
I would have liked to see more numbered lists or charts, but that could be because I am more analytical and logical in my thinking than this author is. It seemed to take several chapters of stories before she got into the how that she wanted to recommend to the reader. Then, because, again it wasn’t in list or chart form it was harder for me to process the details on the how.
Much of the actual advice on how to eat seemed sound to me, although I would have made several major tweaks if I were writing it. The nutritional advice is not this book’s strongest point. One of the best pieces of information that the author shared was that every person’s body is individual and needs to be treated as such. Amen to that.
I think this book’s strongest point was to help fellow dieters to feel that they are not alone and in the process of doing that, to take away some of the guilt and shame that some dieters may have. Another thing I liked was the way the author weaved in Bible scriptures so seamlessly into her writing.
If you need encouragement to keep going with your weight loss journey, check this book out. It may just be the shot in the arm that you need.
