4 Days to a Forever Marriage by Dr. Gary and Norma Smalley
4 Days to a Forever Marriage by Dr. Gary and Norma Smalley
There are a lot of really good tips contained in this book! They even did not leave out mentioning what I consider to be the most important points (more on this below).
I did not feel the title was accurate. I do not think it will take only four days to get a better marriage. Granted, they set it up as a four day study, so, yes, you learn the information in four days…but four days to a forever marriage—I think not.
Since the tips contained within this book seemed a little bit random to me, I would suggest you ask the Holy Spirit what is here for you as you read it and be sure to use the reflection questions at the end of each chapter—do not skip that part.
I liked the fact that the authors mentioned the pitfall of assuming. It is so easy to assume we know what our spouse needs or wants but we really need to ask them and even better, ask the Holy Spirit since He knows even better than our spouse does!
The authors mentioned briefly the two things I consider to be most important and foundational to a good Christian marriage—1. being focused on God and not being focused on either our spouse or our marriage and 2. praying together as husband and wife. I did not feel that these two things were emphasized enough though. They seem so foundational to me and nothing else will work right without these two things in place.
I don’t think this was a perfect Christian marriage book but it definitely had lots of good wisdom from this seasoned Christian couple. If you involve the Holy Spirit as much as possible in your reading and application of its ideas, I think this book can have a good benefit for you as a couple.
