Book Review: A Radical Faith by James Goll
Book Review: A Radical Faith by James Goll
From the introduction, “…this book is book-length Bible study on one theme, the enduring fundamentals of the faith that must be built into the foundation of every mature Christian.”
One of the things that I really appreciated about this book was that the author included the things that the Bible says are the foundation for a Christian life, not just what he or some other theologian or “expert” thinks are the fundamentals.
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, [2] Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Heb 6:1-2 KJV
From the verses quoted above, Mr. Goll takes at least one whole chapter on each topic and does a thorough job of exploring each concept and not leaving out “controversial” subjects. He also anticipates typical questions or objections and addresses those just as thoroughly and in a biblically- sound manner.
I found this book to be easy-to-read, written in a conversational style without a lot of theologian-ese. It was also easy to understand, clear and laid out in a logical progression. The liberal sprinkling of personal stories throughout made it more interesting and gave us glimpses into the author’s real life.
There was one specific piece of information that I was very grateful to receive that I don’t remember reading anywhere else. I knew that my water baptism was more than a mere symbol (which is what I had been taught in a couple of denominations) because of my personal experience and how it clearly changed my Christian walk but I never had words to describe or understand what had happened in the invisible realm. Now I do—it was a circumcision of the heart. Thank you, Mr. Goll.
The information contained in this book is so needed. If you’ve never before studied the subjects listed above and even if you have I urge you to get your own copy of this book. I went for decades of doing Bible study, hearing sermons, even looking for Bible study books on the “fundamentals” and never found this information!
