Book Review: Self Deliverance by K. A. Schneider
Book Review: Self Deliverance by K. A. Schneider
This book is all about how to minister deliverance to yourself. I believe in the whole concept of self deliverance and this book was very easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to implement.
I agree with his premise that it is quite common to see people go through deliverance from a ministry (from someone else) and find themselves back where they started a few short months later on. It’s true that people need to know how to do their own spiritual warfare.
His personal stories were particularly pertinent and helpful at every turn.
Included were explanations of what demons are, how they gain access and common areas that need to be taken care of (“closing doors”). He also makes a good case for the whole need of self deliverance itself.
I liked the fact that he talked about our authority and that it is based in relationship with the Lord. The author was also very encouraging about staying in the battle and not giving up.
One idea that he presented seems controversial to me (apart from the whole concept of self deliverance that some people may find controversial). It is that he thinks demons can read your mind, that is, hear your thoughts. Because he believes this he advocates talking to them (“casting them out”) in your mind, and that we don’t always need to or should talk to them out loud.
I would have liked to see some other ideas addressed, particularly, how to know if you need deliverance and also knowing how to distinguish between problems with our flesh vs. the world vs. the demonic. He is not saying that everything is a demonic problem but he gave no way to distinguish between these areas.
The actual examples and instructions of basic self deliverance were helpful and easy to put into practice. But because he did not address some of the things I mentioned I would categorize this book as a self deliverance manual for beginners.
If you are new to deliverance or new to self deliverance then you probably really need this book or another book like it as this topic is neglected in most churches in America. If you are very familiar with deliverance this book may not have much that is new for you but it may prove helpful as a book to give away.

Interesting. In my Bible study last year, we learned that the enemy cannot read our minds. This was so comforting to me! I’d always been taught differently, however, we do need to remember that body language can speak volumes too. I don’t focus on the darkness at all, actually, but rather focus on Col: 3:1: Since then you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ sits at the right hand of the father. That said, we do need to wear the armor of God daily and be aware of ungodly things in our path!
Yes, that’s why I said it was controversial. In the end our behavior should not be much different regardless if the enemy can or cannot read our thoughts.
I would consider myself a beginner in the self-deliverance area so this would be a good start for me. Thank you for the review. It gives me a lot to think about.
If you do read it, please let me know what you think. Thanks!
I read the same thing previously, that demons can’t read our thoughts (citing Jesus’ temptation in the desert… Satan wouldn’t have kept going if he could read Jesus’ thoughts). But I agree, it doesn’t change much in terms of our behavior. I have been experimenting with this somewhat lately. I was listening to a testimonial about healing and leaps of faith and have been struggling with extreme pain for some time now. I was taking pretty heavy duty pain relievers daily, multiple times a day and I prayed hard about it and then said to God, my leap of faith is going to be stopping my pain medication. Every time I start to feel pain I think, “No weapon formed against me shall stand,” and I haven’t needed any pain medication in three weeks! That might not seem like that long, but considering how much I was taking daily, that is huge. I feel so much better. God is so great!
Thanks Kristi for sharing this! It is huge! We are called to take captive every thought to the obedience of Christ no matter where the thoughts originate from.
I plan to get the book. I wanted to comment regarding “the enemy reading our mind.” I was always taught that he could not read our mind; however, I did experience first hand an incident whereby my pastor (at the time) had asked me quote for quote if I had said something to a particular individual. I told him “no, I did not say anything (what he had quoted) to her but I was thinking it.” She was into demonic practices, she read my mind and lied by telling him what I thought not spoken.
Very interesting. It really shouldn’t make that much difference. We need to guard our thoughts and be sold out to Jesus either way.
Did the bible say that devils cannot read our thoughts?
Or were those teachings mere assumptions / deductions by human Conclusions?
It would be more reliable if a definite scripture addressed that issue.
I don’t think the Bible is definitive one way or another as far as it is worded but there are logical conclusions that people make on their own and the conclusions don’t always agree.
