Book Review: You Can Hear the Voice of God by Steve Sampson
Book Review: You Can Hear the Voice of God by Steve Sampson
I really enjoyed reading this book! I found it to be clear and easy to understand and it flowed well from topic to topic.
You Can Hear the Voice of God was also extremely practical. The author included plenty of real-life examples that were relevant in illustrating his points. There was also an entire chapter at the end that was completely just practical steps to better hearing.
Included are all of the most common ways that we hear from God, including some ways that only “charismatics” believe in. Mr. Sampson, refreshingly, does not believe that we hear only from the written word. Please note that the word only in the previous sentence is important, because we do hear God from His Word.
This book was thorough as an overview. There are no great details on each particular way we hear God, but if there were that would make for volumes. For example, there are lots of long books just on the topic of dreams alone.
I like the fact that the author did not focus on wrong hearing and all the things the enemy can do to mess us up. Instead he mentions tidbits of this type of info intermingled throughout the book. This kept the focus where it belongs, on God, and not on the enemy.
I found plenty of “treasures” here. In fact, I highlighted something on almost every page of this book!
Here are a few sample quotes from this book:
To learn to hear from God is the greatest asset any Christian can possess. (p. 25)
Fasting from our own thoughts and opinions creates a pathway to hearing God clearly. (p. 28)
The hardest part of prayer is praying until you fell your spirit break through into God’s presence. (p. 57)
Intimacy can only occur when there is no fear of judgment. (p. 108)
…when we come to Him, we must desire to receive something we previously did not have. (p. 110)
It is of utmost importance to ask God only one question at a time and then take time to listen for a few minutes. (p. 166)
In order to hear from God, you need to know that He will talk to you right then and there as you are praying. (p. 167)
I wouldn’t say that there would be a whole lot of new stuff or even encouragement for a person well seasoned in the art of hearing God, but for most of us, that does even apply. If you are interested in hearing God better, chances are you need more teaching on it and if that’s the case this book will definitely help you out!

This book sounds like it would be useful to many people, including myself. There are times when I feel at loss as to where He is in all that is going on in life.
Hearing God is just beginning of our walk with Him. How can we truly obey if we don’t hear Him? Every believer should focus on this skill until they a good start with this.
That sounds like a great book, especially for those who aren’t “charismatic”. for myself, I’ve loved James Goll’s and Cindy Jacobs’ books on this topic!
Yes, it may be a good book for charismatics but it also may offend them!
This book seems like it would be great for me and others as well. I will be sure to read it and pass it on. If you want to grow deeper in your relationship with God you gave to search, grow and be willing to change.
Great. If you do read it, I’d be curious to hear your opinion of it. Please come back and share. Thanks!
“Intimacy can only occur when there is no fear of judgment” this is my favourite. It took me a long time in my christian journey to embrace this intimacy, even as the world is quick to judge and there is the inner critic. As long as these are in place, it will be difficult for anyone to hear from God. Nice review Cheryl
I agree. There can be some difficulty in hearing God with an inner critic.
