Getting Closer to God Series Part 3
Getting Closer to God Series Part 3
This is the third post in a series to help you get closer to God. I am purposely leaving time in between suggestions to allow you to put each idea into practice instead of flooding you with several suggestions at once.
Relationship with God
If you want to get closer to God, you will need to have a relationship with Him. In its most basic form, a relationship involves spending time together. This does not necessarily mean constant talking either but it does involve some communication. The main point is that you must spend time with God in order to be in a relationship with Him. There is no substitute to spending that time. How much time are you devoting to improving your relationship with God?
Communication with God
A relationship usually involves some communication though. In its most basic form, communication involves talking and listening back and forth.
You talking to God equals prayer. That is not all that prayer is, but you talking to God is prayer.
You listening to God involves more than one thing. It should include Bible intake of some kind. The Bible is God’s Word that He gave us and the things that He wants us to know. If you are a true Christian, then the author of the Bible is living inside of you (The Holy Spirit) and He wants to use His own word to communicate with you.
You listening to God is not only reading or studying or meditating on the Word of God though. God speaks to us in a variety of ways. He can use dreams for example, which is amply demonstrated in the Bible as a way that He speaks to His people. He can speak directly to your spirit, which is sometimes referred to as His still small voice. There is no substitute to listening to God. Most Christians talk to God more than they listen to God and are imbalanced in that way. I encourage you to be still and listen. If you are new to listening to God you may want to ask God to help you find a mature Christian in your life to help you discern and confirm whose voice you are hearing.
Note: I do not believe it is biblical nor safe to listen for God’s voice without ANY Bible intake. The Bible is useful in confirming WHO you are hearing. The voice of God will not contradict clear principles in scripture. Important note: Technically, if you are a born again Christian you already are close to God. The Holy Spirit is living inside of you. How much closer can He get? But there is a place of feeling closer and of getting to know God better. That is what these posts are really all about. Please share one thing you are planning to do to improve your relationship with or communication with God.
