Memorize Scripture
Memorize Scripture
Why memorize scripture?
The scriptures themselves promise blessings, prosperity and success to those who meditate on God’s Word…and it is much easier to meditate on something that you have memorized. At least part of the process of memorizing is meditating (the saying it out loud to yourself part).
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly…his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night…and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Ps. 1:1-3 KJV
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night…for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Josh. 1:8 KJV
For several more reasons on why you should memorize scripture check out John Piper’s lecture on youtube on this subject here:

Just for the record, I do NOT think that you hear God ONLY through reading His Word, which is what Mr. Piper at least implies at the end of this lecture. How to memorize scripture
The most important point is to start saying the scripture out loud to yourself. This is the fastest, most effective way to memorize scripture.
Don’t get too ambitious and set an unrealistic goal for yourself. If you end up finding it very easy you can always “up” your commitment, but it is much harder to stop feeling like a “failure” if you don’t do your original too-high goal for yourself. Some people suggest as little as one verse per week as a goal to start with.
Try as many different systems as you need to, to make this into a habit. This is one spiritual habit or discipline that is well worth the effort.
Write your intended verse on an index card or post it note and carry it with you. Type it into the note section of your smart phone. Turn it into a screensaver on your computer. Do whatever you need to do.
Check the various programs listed below to see if you can find one that fits your needs and personality. One important component is to make sure that you incorporate review into your system. You don’t want to spend all that time and effort to memorize something and then forget it simply because you forgot to review.
Please do not consider the listing of these systems as a paid recommendation. This list is merely for your convenience. With the wide variety of systems available there is sure to be one that will work for you so check these out.
