More Than Ordinary by Doug Sherman
More Than Ordinary by Doug Sherman
Although the title was meant to speak about how we can live our lives with Christ, I think it aptly describes this book’s contents as well. This is no ordinary book on Christian living. In fact, this is one of the best books I have ever read in the Christian living category (and I have hundreds of books of that genre in my personal library!).
There are two fundamental categories of things that are the most important to know the truth about. One is, who is God—what does He say about Himself—what is His character really like. The other is, who are we—what does God say about us—what is the truth about where we stand with God and what He thinks of us. This book mainly addresses the first fundamental issue and does so in a brilliant way. He does tell us quite a lot about God, but this author also makes you want to find out for yourself—brilliant.
I love the way Mr. Sherman talks about God. In that respect, he reminds me of Graham Cooke (whom he quoted a couple of times). He talks about how God relentlessly pursues us, how He is kind, and happy and how much He loves us (and lots more).
Another thing I loved about this book was all the questions that the author gives us to ask ourselves and to ask God. Being a coach, I love and understand the power of good questions and I also knew God was leading me to ask Him more questions. More than just more questions, though, this book gives you really good questions to ask!
This book is also very practical. He gives you real things to do, but never turns anything into a formula— he stresses the point that we need a relationship with God, not rules or a formula for living.
One more thing, he was real, authentic, open and transparent and never made you feel inadequate or judged as inferior. Sounds a lot like God! No surprise as he claims that he co-labored with Christ to write this book. It shows. If you sense any shame or condemnation when reading this book you can be sure it is not from God (or from this author)!
I very rarely give out 5 stars to a book that I review as I want to reserve that rating for truly outstanding books. This is one of those rare finds that is truly outstanding.
