What is God like?
What is God like?
First off, I am referring to the One True Living God—the God of the Christian Holy Bible.
We may like to compare God to other things but check out what He says about Himself.
God asks us who He is like.
To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him? Isa 40:18 KJV
To whom then will ye liken me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. Isa 40: 25 KJV
To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like? Isa 46:5 KJV
For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? [who] among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD? Psa 89:6 (See also 2 Sam. 22:32, Mic 7:18, Ex 15:11, Psa 89:8, Isa 44:8)
It sounds like God is almost daring us to compare Him to something or someone else.
He answers His own question.
…I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me. Isa 43:10 KJV
…I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me. Isa 46:9 KJV
Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works. Psa 86:8 KJV
Forasmuch as there is none like unto thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might. Jer 10:6 KJV (see also 1 Sam 2:2, 1 Kings 8:23, Jer 10:6, 2 Sam 7:22, Isa 44:6, Isa 43:11, Isa 45:5)
So, who or what is God like? NOTHING!! There is no one or no thing like Him that ever was or ever will be.
This doesn’t mean we can’t praise Him for His character, qualities or doings! On the contrary this is all the more reason to praise Him!
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. Psa 145:3 KJV
For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. Psa 96:4 KJV
Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, in the mountain of his holiness. Psa 48:1 KJV

I would say much of religious heresy is the result of a misunderstanding of the basic nature of God. And once we have a proper understanding of God, then usually most of the areas of our life coincide with who God is and what He desires for each one of us. Josh McDowell
A heart full of thoughts about the splendor of who God is and what God does can no more conceive of an end of praise than it can conceive of an end of God. Sam Storms
